The Kids R Kids day care center is at the center of an investigation after workers left a 4-year-old boy alone late at night locked inside its facility.

The incident happened Friday night at the facility located at 415 Woodbury Road, in Waterford Lakes.

The Orange County Sheriff's Office and the Department of Children and Families have two separate investigations going on right now.

Both agencies are interviewing people involved in the case.

Jasmine O'Neil, the mother of the child who was left in the day care for about three hours, spoke out on Monday.

She said it was difficult to bring her 4-year-old son Gabriel to the babysitter on Monday.

The incident happened when O'Neil dropped her son off at the facility around 6 p.m. The center was holding extended hours so parents could get some time to themselves.

O'Neil said she took a nap before she was planning to go get her son, but her alarm didn't go off.

She woke up in a panic around 11:20 p.m. and rushed to the day care, only to find it was closed for the night.

"I didn't know where he was," she said. "I didn't want to breathe."

The woman called the Sheriff's Office, and deputies were able to get in touch with an employee through the alarm company. The employee didn't have a key, though, and so Orange County Fire Rescue was called in and was able to gain access to the building.

The day care employee was able to get in contact with the owner, who then provided investigators with a list of employees who worked Friday night.

The child was located around 1:30 a.m., deputies said.

"It blew my mind and the trust I have for people is going — it's gone," O'Neil said. "It shows more than ever that people don't care about your kids like you do."

Jose and Rosa Diaz, the owners of Kids R Kids, released a statement Saturday morning stating they fired two of the four teachers who were at the day care Friday night.

In addition, the owners said they are retraining their staff in regard to proper procedures for clearing and closing the center.

"Although they child did not appear to be harmed, the potential for harm is there any time you leave a child alone unsupervised, so we are obviously concerned about that," said Kristi Gray, public information officer for the Department of Children and Families.

O'Neil said this was a learning experience for her, too.

"I really need to know what is going on at all times and be a little bit more careful," she said.

DCF officials said Kids R Kids has no previous problems on record. The facility will receive at least one citation in connection to the incident.

O'Neil said she will not bring her son back to the facility.

Orange County deputies said charges could be filed, but the investigation remains under review.
