The Florida Highway Patrol is investigating a crash in Volusia County involving a school bus, an SUV and a tractor-trailer that overturned in DeLand that injured one student, and sent a 37-year-old man to the hospital in critical condition.

The crash happened shortly after 2:15 p.m. Friday, on Paradise Drive near West New York Avenue. Paradise Drive was shut down westbound at North Shell Road as troopers investigated the crash.

According to FHP Sgt. Kim Montes, the semitruck involved in the crash was traveling eastbound and approached a school bus from Woodward Elementary that was stopped in the westbound lane to unload students.

The driver of another vehicle, a 2007 Toyota, had stopped for the school bus to unload the students when the semi approached and was unable to stop in time. The semi struck the back of the Toyota and pushed it into the front of the school bus before veering of the roadway and flipping to it's side.

The driver of the Toyota was transported to a nearby hospital and is in critical condition. One student was taken to the hospital for medical treatment of minor injuries.

Sgt. Montes says charges against the truck driver are pending an investigation.
