Brevard County residents are trying to get the government to pave a road that's been nothing but dirt for more than a decade.

"We've had accidents upon accidents out here, people going into the ditch. We had someone killed," said Mary Benell, who lives on Satellite Boulevard off State Road 520 in Canaveral Groves.

That someone was a 30-year-old woman who, according to FHP, rolled her SUV into a ditch back on April 18.

She lost control on Satellite Boulevard around midnight. A small memorial marks the spot where she died.

Two days later another rollover crash happened just yards away. Neighbors said a man lost control and rolled over into a ditch on the same side of the road.

It happened right in front of Benell's home. She's been fighting for a decade -- since moving there -- to make the road safer.

She said the homeowner's association did a study and some 8,000 vehicles used Satellite Boulevard in just one week. Many taking it as a shortcut.

Residents said paving this road would be an ideal situation, but they are willing to listen to any other options.

Others like Louise Goloversic are worried about speeding. Drivers going well above the posted 35 MPH limit put others in danger.

"I've also been hit several times out here," said Goloversic. "People lose control and start bouncing towards you. You're wondering if they are going to stop or get control before they hit you."

She's also concerned for her grandchildren riding the school bus on the road with all the bumps and uneven dirt.

Right now the county uses a plow to grate the dirt road twice a week. But neighbors said the high traffic volume negates the work in no time.

"In just a half day, in dry weather, it gets that washboard effect again," said Benell.

Not to mention the dust kicked up causes visibility concerns. So for now, the wait continues for something to be done.

"I have my daughter and grandchildren who live out here. I'm scared to death of it," said Goloversic.

We spoke to the county, and officials there said they are aware most of the residents would like the roadway paved. But it's not on the project list at this time, and there is no funding that has been set aside to do so.
