High school sports history has been made in Brevard County.

Both rowing teams at Melbourne High School qualified for the National Scholastic Rowing Association Championships, which are set to take place May 22, in New Jersey.

The boys and girls teams qualified in April -- marking the first time in school history that both teams qualified in the same year.

But, there's one big problem: The teams have to pay their own way.

Sending the 10-member team and coaches via plane, plus shipping two 25-foot boats and equipment, lodging and meals, will cost them about $12,000.

The teams have just a few weeks to raise the money. If they don't, they won't be able to compete.

"Yes, it's expensive, but we really want to do it," said Madi Wright, a member of the Melbourne High School rowing team. "We need a lot of help doing it."

Coach Jon Lothian said his athletes have been practicing five or six days a week since August. They deserve to make the trip, he said.

"They earned their spot to go," Lothian said. "If they would like to support us, we'd love to have it."

All of the seniors on the team will miss graduation to compete (it falls on the same weekend). If you're interested in helping send the team to the national rowing championships, go here.

Help the Bulldogs head to nationals

All three Five Guys Burgers and Fries in Brevard County will be holding fundraisers from 5 to 9 p.m. Wednesday, May 7. Part of the night's proceeds will go to the row team. They have locations in Merritt Island, Viera and West Melbourne.

Players from the team will be in attendance, too.

Also, from 6 to 9 p.m. May 13, Sublime Restaurant in Cocoa Village will hold a fundraiser to help raise money.
