A major three-year expansion project on a heavily traveled Orange County road finally wraps up.

This morning, South Alafaya Trail opened as four lanes from Mark Twain Boulevard to Avalon Park Boulevard.

Transportation officials said between 60,000 and 100,000 people use the road daily.

The project's $31 million cost was cheaper than initially planned since county leaders took out landscaping and lighting packages, along with deciding against a bicycle lane.

County leaders did add more turn lanes, two new traffic signals and pedestrian paths along this stretch of road.

Alafaya Trail is the main connector to State Road 408 for several huge subdivision communities like Avalon Park and Stoneybrook East.

County officials held a ribbon-cutting ceremony at 9 a.m., opening the expansion to drivers.
