The mother accused of driving her van into the Atlantic Ocean in Daytona Beach with her children inside has been charged with attempted murder.

The state attorney's office announced Tuesday that Ebony Wilkerson was charged with three counts of attempted second-degree murder, and three counts of child abuse.

Before Tuesday, Wilkerson had only been charged by the Volusia County Sheriff's Office.

Video shows Wilkerson drove her minivan into the Atlantic Ocean on March 4, near the approach to Silver Beach Road in Daytona Beach.

As the investigation continued, deputies learned Wilkerson was in Florida to escape what she said was a violent husband, and her family said she appeared to be mentally disturbed hours before she drove into the surf.

Wilkerson was moved from the Volusia County jail to the Halifax Medical Center's psychiatric ward for mental health and prenatal care.

A spokesperson with the State Attorney's office said Wilkerson will be in court Thursday for an arraignment.
