A 2-foot-long pet ball python that a teacher brought into a Volusia County elementary school went missing Monday morning, causing a building to evacuate for about 30 minutes, officials said.

The teacher brought the snake in to show a third-grade class at Citrus Grove Elementary School.

The snake went missing, though, and a building was evacuated. However, the snake is nonvenomous and no threat, so activities resumed to normal, according to Nancy Wait, spokeswoman for Volusia County Schools.

The snake was in a locked glass aquarium. The lid buckled, which allowed the snake to escape, Wait said.

The snake was still missing as of 1 p.m.

Wait said the teacher is not facing discipline because she followed the guidelines for animals in the classroom.
