A large plane and a replica shuttle with big ties to Kennedy Space Center are about to be joined together to form a Houston landmark.

A Boeing 747 -- a former Shuttle Carrier Aircraft -- is being moved in large pieces some 10 miles over two nights on April 28 and 29. The jet is moving from Ellington Field to Space Center Houston in a convoy moving at only three miles an hour  -- where it will be reassembled for a eight-story tall attraction.

It means crews will be closing roads, dismantling traffic lights, signs and utility poles to make the trip.

The replica shuttle Independence will then be mounted atop the former ferry flight plane and put on display.

The SCA flew space shuttles back to the Space Coast after landings in the early days of the program. The shuttle once was on display at the KSC Visitor Complex before being moved on a barge to Johnson Space Center.
