A Polk County teacher accused of having sex with a 17-year-old student, getting pregnant and then having an abortion was also accused of having an inappropriately relationship with a student six years ago when she taught in Orlando, according to new information released Friday.

Officials in Orange County had investigated Jennifer Fichter on accusations that she sent inappropriate text messages to a student while she was a teacher at Robinswood Middle School in 2008.

According to documents from the Orange County School District, Fichter told another teacher that she loved the boy and felt like they were in a relationship.

The other teacher also told investigators Fichter labeled student text messages on her phone with names of teachers to avoid questions.

Investigators talked to another student who said Fichter also texted him saying she "was going to smash" the other boy, meaning she wanted to have sex with him.

Fichter was removed from the classroom in November 2008. When she was questioned about the allegations, she told district officials she was not aware texting students was inappropriate.

It is important to note that beginning Dec. 9, 2010, almost two hours after Fichter's resignation, OCPS enhanced a well-defined management directive regarding the employee use of technology.

Among other items, the directive states:

No employee of the Orange County Public Schools should engage in any texting or other social media with any OCPS student with the following two exceptions.

  •   The student is their child.
  •   An employee may group text or post information that is related to a class, athletic, or extracurricular activity

Another management directive clearly explains employee accountability for reporting child abuse, neglect, or abandonment. The directive reads, “All employees of Orange County Public Schools have an affirmative duty to immediately report known or suspected child abuse, neglect, or abandonment.”

The documents said Fichter also admitted that her sister sent text messages to several students, telling them not to talk to investigators. Fichter, however, said her sister got the students' numbers from her phone without her permission.

Fichter resigned from Robinswood Middle School on Dec. 19, 2008. OCPS has confirmed they were not contacted by Polk County in regards to the the employment of Fichter.

Earlier this week, Fichter, now 29, was arrested on charges that she had sex with a student at Central Florida Aerospace Academy, in Lakeland.

Investigators in Polk County said Fichter admitted to having sex with a 17-year-old boy dozens of times in her pickup truck. She also told them the teen got her pregnant, and she had an abortion.

Fichter was locked up in the Polk County Jail on a bond of $70,000.

She also faces charges in Hillsborough County of unlawful sex with a minor in January 2014.
