SunRail will begin testing a new late-night train tonight.

Officials said the holidays are the perfect time to expose more potential customers to SunRail with the test schedule.

The train is expected to start in DeBary, heading south at 9:05 p.m. and arrive at Sand Lake Road at 10:08 p.m. It will then return northbound at 10:20 p.m., ending in DeBary at 11:23 p.m.

The Florida Department of Transportation’s goal is to bring more people downtown to evening events at places such as the Amway Center and Dr. Phillips Center for the Performing Arts. They also hope to satisfy growing readership demands. Officials said they're now seeing an increase, with 3,200 boardings per day, on average.

Some riders seemed pleased that trains will potentially be running later, if the extended schedule becomes permanent.

"It's a really good idea for people who don't work the typical 9 (a.m.) to 5 (p.m.)," David Smith said. "For people who live here but work in Winter Park, it's a really good idea. I guess I'll just have to wait and see how they execute it."

However, others said they still aren't satisfied with the schedules.

"It doesn't go late enough," said Ryan Douglas. "If I was going to use it, I would go to happy hour and go out to eat."

The additional train will serve all 12 SunRail station stops, but will not operate on weekends or most federal holidays, including Christmas Day and New Year's Day.

Since this is only a test run, officials said there is not a firm timetable on how long the schedule will last.

Officials said they will need buy-in from the five local funding partners -- Orange, Osceola, Seminole and Volusia counties, as well as the City of Orlando.

They plan to evaluate the results and present findings to local funding partners in January.

Meanwhile, the City of Orlando announced Monday that SunRail will offer free, limited service on New Year's Day for people attending the Buffalo Wild Wings Citrus Bowl. The goal is to give game attendees an alternative to get downtown.

The first train for New Year's Day will leave from DeBary in Volusia County at 10 a.m. The train will stop running around 12:30 p.m., and then pick back up again around 5 p.m. after the game.
