Flagler County is losing one of its beachfront parks but it won’t be for long. Call it Extreme Makeover: County Park edition.

Varn Park is located on State Road A1A, north of Beverly Beach and is a popular spot, even this time of the year for surf fishing and with dog-owners, who are always looking for pet-friendly beaches.

The park closes Monday and won’t open again until April 30.

During that time, a nearly half-a-million dollar transformation will take place, with a redesigned entrance, new bathroom facility and a third walkway over the dunes.

An extra 60 parking spaces will also be added, which will help during the busy summer months.

The county says 80 percent of the funding for the project came from a FDOT grant. The rest will come from park impact fees which are collected on new residential construction projects.
