A major highway could be built in the backyards of hundreds of people in Osceola County. It’s part of a planned connection to link I-4 to Poinciana.

As construction on Poinciana Parkway revs up, a new proposal has this road connecting to I-4, something advocates say could bring millions to the area.

"If we can connect Poinciana to the region then maybe people will have an excuse or rather a reason to come to Poinciana,” said Atlee Mercer with Osceola County Expressway Authority.

However, some people are concerned about some of these 6 possible routes. Such as option 1, which could take the highway through Reedy Creek, which includes preservation land.

“I just want to make sure they pick a route that has the least environmental impact,” said Jenny Welch with the local Audubon Society.

Others said they are concerned with the routes that could go through or back up to the Celebration community. But I have learned they are working to eliminate routes that would affect those areas.

“We have worked with Walt Disney World to find a route that wouldn’t be too destructive to them,” Mercer said.

While Poinciana Parkway is set to open by spring of 2016, this proposed connection to I-4 isn’t expected to even break ground for another 10 years.
