An 11-year-old has been upgraded from critical to stable condition after she was hit by a bullet while sleeping in an Orange County home.

At 1:13 a.m. Sunday, the sheriff’s office received a call of shots fired on West 13th Street.

A woman inside the home said the girl was lying in a front room when she was hit in the back.

"An 11-year-old female inside the house was struck by one of the rounds," said Lt. Tony Minnis.

Family members took the girl to Florida Hospital Apopka. She was then airlifted to Arnold Palmer Hospital for Children, where she underwent surgery.

"It appears that the house was targeted,” Minnis said. “However, I'll leave that up to the investigators to make the final determination. We found approximately 25 rounds had been fired towards the residence."

Investigators used a metal detector to find the shells left behind.

Evidence markers suggest whoever shot at the house did so from across the street.

The home is next to the Pleasant View Missionary Baptist Church.

"Many of our congregants have expressed grave concern coming to worship, having to make such a discovery right here in the shadows of our church," Pastor Michael D. Warren said.

The pastor said the unincorporated area of Apopka is depressed with rampant drug use and crime.
