A young girl says she was attacked by a pit bull mix while walking her dog through her neighborhood, but the owner of that dog says his dog was only defending his territory. News 13 spoke to both sides.

Fortunately everyone should recover from the incident, although it is likely to leave some physical and emotional scars in the wake of the vicious dog fight.

It happened just after 10 a.m. Friday, and in an exclusive interview Lissette Viruet said she had just sent her 13-year-old daughter out to walk the family dog.

"I hear her running into the house screaming and she is holding up her hand and it is bleeding profusely all down her arm and she said that she was just attacked," said Viruet.

The teen was walking her dog past another house, a half block away from her home, when Joe Stanfield says he was walking into his house.

"I opened my door to go into my house and it ran out because it saw that dog in my front yard. It was right about where that light post is. Right in the middle of my yard," said Stanfield.

Stanfield says as the dogs began to viciously go after one another, he tried to grab his dog and the young girl was doing the same.

"I got my dog on the ground and I'm holding him away and I got my hand out and that is how I got bit by her dog and I'm screaming to the neighbors, 'help her help her.'"

Neighbor Kelly Sillito and her husband came outside.

"She was crying for help and our neighbor and my husband both ran over and that neighbor tackled her dog to get him off," said Kelly Sillito.

The dogs were separated and both owners went to the hospital to treat their respective dog bites.

"I feel bad for her it shouldn't have happened," said Stanfield.

Stanfield's dog was taken from the scene by animal control. The dog will be held for 10 days while a vicious dog investigation is conducted.
