A Brevard County police department wants to make sure people know who to call in case of an emergency, especially in the wake of some recent incidents.

Melbourne police said residents have told them they don't want to bother officers, or don't know if it's important enough to call 911.

But they said the department needs those calls.

The topic came up during recent meetings regarding several downtown crimes where a man was killed and another seriously hurt.

Police Chief Steve Mimbs said when in doubt, call the emergency number if it's a life threatening situation, traffic accident, fire, or crime in progress.

However, residents will want to use the non-emergency number -- (321) 608-MPD1 (6731) -- if you want to report a noisy party, abandoned vehicle or just to file complaints.

Residents should take note due to the department's system upgrade their numbers have changed.
