Two people were killed after the SUV they were driving crashed into a pick-up truck Tuesday afternoon in Volusia County.

It happened around 3:15 p.m. at the intersection of State Road 40 and State Road 11.

The Florida Highway Patrol said the SUV was traveling eastbound on SR 40 and the driver lost control and spun backwards into the westbound lane and was struck by a pick-up truck driven by James Hanis, 66, of Seville.

Troopers said the impact of the crash caused the two people in the SUV, Jessica Marcus, 23, and Jaime Desmarais, 27, both from Pierson, to be ejected as it overturned.   They were both pronounced dead at the scene.

Hanis was transported to Halfifax Medical Center in serious condition.

The crash remains under investigation and troopers are working to determine who was driving the SUV.
