A small dog in Marion County is lucky to be alive after falling 60 feet into a rock quarry in Ocala on Thursday.

King, a small Yorkie-poo, fell into the quarry behind Our Lucaya Mobile Home Park, on the 6800 block of Northwest Gainesville Road, shortly after 1 p.m.

"He came in through here and he was chasing the cats, and his claws don't hold as tight and he slid on down over there," King's owner Judy Sims said while standing along the fenceline above the quarry.

Marion County Fire Rescue sent a Tech Rescue Team to the scene. The team performed a "low-angle rescue" and pulled King to safety.

King was said to be doing just fine after his rescue.

"I'm just happy that he's OK," Sims said.

Now with time to reflect on the near-tragedy, residents of the mobile home park are turning their attention to the potential danger lurking just a few feet behind their homes. The fence separating Our Lucoya Mobile Home Park from the quarry has holes and has been beaten down by tree branches.

"It's very dangerous back there. The walls go straight down," neighbor Daniel Wolford said while carefully walking his dog on a leash.

Sims said it could have been a child instead of King. "It's dangerous," he said.

The property manager of the community said she spent today talking with Marion County officials trying to figure out who is responsible for upkeep of the fence. In the meantime, she said, they are in the process of making temporary safety repairs.
