You hear it every year during the holidays, but not everyone gets the message of how to avoid being a victim of thieves around the holidays.

Police and sheriff's deputies in Orange County are reminding everyone to beware of thieves.

They say the thieves often break into cars while the owners are shopping looking for gifts and other valuables in plain sight.

"What we're trying to accomplish today is to remind people, don't let your guard down. You have a responsibility for your personal safety," said Sheriff Jerry Demings.

Police officers and sheriff's deputies will be watching shopping malls for thieves, which Sheriff Demings says has helped cut down on crime.
