A Florida Dept. of Transportation project moves to east Central Florida, and Brevard County will get the first traffic signals that can stand up to hurricane force winds.

FDOT is retrofitting existing traffic signals starting on the Space Coast in the coming days.

The $1.1 million project involves installing am 'adjustable pivotal hanger' to re-enforce the signal to stand up to high winds.

A total of 2,855 of them will be installed at 305 locations in Brevard, Flagler, Marion and Volusia Counties and take less than a year.

Other areas of the state have gotten the hangers since 2012. All work will happen at night and some weekends.

Drivers should be aware of any detours at those intersections.
