For the sixth year in a row, volunteers in Flagler County have harnessed their energy to help their neighbors.

It's called Team Feed Flagler, and the goal is to collect thousands of pounds of nonperishable foods to stock shelves in area food pantries and go into family meal boxes in time to hit dinner tables for Thanksgiving.

That food began to roll into Cattleman's Hall at the Flagler County Fairgrounds on Wednesday morning.

A group of professional women, who call themselves Chicks with Cans, have been an integral part in raising awareness for the program since 2009.

This year, the group collected more than 10,000 pounds of food.

Alex Middleton said it's something they plan on doing for years to come, too.

"We're going to definitely continue Chicks with Cans every year until, I mean, I think there's always going to be a need here in the community," Middleton said. "We're always going to do whatever we can to help that."

The deadline to request a family meal box has passed, but everyone is invited to take part in a free hot Thanksgiving meal at one of four locations around Flagler County on Nov. 26 or Nov. 27.

Volunteers will spend the next couple of days sorting the collected food into boxes before distribution next week.
