A Flagler County man who drove off during a routine traffic stop died after crashing his car Tuesday near Bunnell, according to the Florida Highway Patrol.

Ronald Evans, 30, of Palm Coast, was stopped around 12:30 p.m. for speeding southbound on U.S. 1, in Bunnell.

A trooper smelled marijuana from the car and said Evans looked to have been impaired.

Evans then drove off and headed north on U.S. 1, going about 90 mph, troopers said.

Evans ran through a red light at the intersection of State Road 100 and U.S. 1. He side-swiped a pickup truck at nearly 100 mph, troopers said. Evans lost control of his car. He was pronounced dead at the scene.

Eastbound State Road 100 near U.S. 1 and one northbound lane of U.S. 1 remained closed due to the crash, troopers said.

The Florida Department of Law Enforcement has been called in to investigate.
