A Flagler County charity which has been helping families for five years is in need of help itself.

A pipeline for donated bicycles has dried up, leaving volunteers scrambling to find a new source for needy kids.

Nadine King began “Christmas Come True” back in 2009 for one simple reason: “I saw the community just literally crashing and people becoming homeless, and families just losing all of their jobs, their livelihood and children.”

And she's been pretty successful in finding volunteers to help meet the needs during the holiday season.

But King is in a lurch now. In the past, she had partnered with Toys for Tots to provide some toys and most of her bicycles.

Toys for Toys is now unable to continue that partnership and King's trying to find a way to fill requests for new bikes.

King understands Toys for Tots' position, but they helped her provide 50 bikes last year and that's a big hole to fill.

King is also quick to point out that a bike is more than just a child's toy because here in Flagler County, there is no countywide public transportation system.

“I have a lot of 18-year olds that ... have part-time jobs and would love to have a bicycle," King said. "That frees up mom to be able to go to work or dad to be able to go to work and it really helps them tremendously to have that flexibility."

King has collection boxes and Christmas trees with “family adoption cards” all over the county, including inside the lobby of the Hammock Beach Resort.

She said guests and members have always helped in the past and she hopes they will again now.

The resort's general manager, Tim Digby, is confident they will come through. “A tree like this, with this wonderful opportunity for our members to be able to support the community is just really, it just fits very nicely in with what we do here at the resort.”

With a month until she hands out her Christmas gift collections to the families, King hopes the call is answered soon.

"I don't want to say no," King said. "I don't want to say no to a 17-year-old that wants to go work. I don't want to say no to a 17-year-old that needs sneakers and a hoodie to keep warm."
