Soon you’ll be able to drive faster on two of Central Florida’s main toll roads. The Central Florida Expressway Authority voted Thursday morning to increase the speed limit.

The Central Florida Expressway Authority voted this morning to increase the speed limit on the State Road 417 and State Road 429 because they said it will make the toll roads safer.

The speed limit will jump from 65 mph to 70 mph. Officials said it is a matter of safety because slower traffic can be a hazard to other drivers.

It’s not uncommon to see cars speeding five to 10 miles over the posted speed limit. And that has the Central Florida Expressway Authority taking a second look at speed limits on State Roads 417 and 429.

So after lengthy studies, they concluded that the roads were meant to travel at higher speeds and board members said slower traffic actually poses a hazard, especially in the left lane.

“And everybody is trying to get around them and just bottlenecks and the next thing you know you got a bump up and then nobody’s going anywhere,” Lake County Commissioner Brenda Carey said.

But Orange County Mayor Teresa Jacobs has another concern. Will the higher speed limit lead to speed traps down the road?

“I do want to make sure that this authority is doing everything it can to give drivers fair warning at the point where the speed limit drops down to a lower level,” Jacobs said.

So the board also agreed to have signs posted well in advance of any change in the speed limit.

Those signs don’t come cheap. It will cost $76,000 to replace all of the signs.

The 70 mph speed limit signs will go up sometime around the end of the year.

Florida Highway Patrol said they will be out enforcing the new speed limit.
