A 5-year-old Brevard County girl who was critically injured after her father says she was attacked by a dog is now in stable condition.

The girl's father said no one saw what happened to his daughter in their yard on Burgess Avenue, in Sharpes, but he suspects a friend's dog attacked the 5-year-old while no one was looking.

Frank Orwig said he was checking on his other child Thursday afternoon inside their home, when a friend came in to tell him something horrible had happened to his daughter.

Orwig said the little girl was lying unconscious in a field where she liked to play. When he picked her up, he said he saw a lot of blood.

First responders arrived on scene, and the 5-year-old was airlifted to Arnold Palmer Hospital for Children in Orlando.

"They did the surgery last night and it looks OK. It looks good," Orwig said Friday morning. "It's still touch-and-go. She's still in the woods, but God's going to find her way home."

Orwig said he believes a friend's dog attacked the child. Brevard County Animal Services said they have quarantined the dog in question while they investigate what happened. The breed of the dog was not immediately identified.

The home is hidden down a dirt road in Sharpes, and Brevard County deputies said no one witnessed what happened to the girl.

No criminal charges have been filed, but civil infractions are being reviewed while DCF investigates.

Deputies have asked anyone who may have information about what happened to call Crimeline at (800) 423-TIPS (8477).
