Accused of murdering his roommate, a 20-year-old man from Orange County is now behind bars and facing first-degree murder charges.

Bryan Santana was arrested Tuesday after deputies say he killed 23-year-old Shelby Fazio, and then abused her body.

Around 9:30 a.m., Orange County Sheriff’s Office deputies were called to a home in the 400 block of N. John Street, where Fazio's body was found inside the apartment by her roommate John Heermance.

According to deputies, Santana said he killed his former roommate by choking her and stabbing her to death. He then sexually assaulted her body. Investigators say he then tried to kill her roommate, John Heermance who was able to escape from his grasp.

He told investigators when he arrived at the home early Tuesday morning he found Bryan Santana washing his hands in the bathroom, and blood smears on the floor leading to Fazio's room. Heermance went to leave, but says he was attacked by Santana with pepper spray and a knife.

Heermance was able to escape and call 911.

The documents also said Santana took Fazio's car and planned to buy a gun so cops would kill him. Instead, he was arrested at a barbershop in downtown Orlando just hours after the brutal murder.

Santana remains at the Orange County jail on first-degree murder charges. He is also charged with attempted murder for the attack on Heermance.

He is being held on a no bond status as the investigation continues.
