Detectives with the Sumter County Sheriff's Office are investigating an alleged rape of a 76-year-old woman by her own family member inside an assisted-living facility in The Villages.

The alleged sexual assault of the woman happened Monday at the Serenades by Sonata Memory Care facility located on Parr Drive.

A spokesperson with the Sumter County Sheriff's Office said the 72-year-old suspect is a family member of the victim.

Shelley Esden, a spokeswoman for Serenades by Sonata Health Care, said no other residents are at risk because the suspect is not a staff member or a contract worker at the facility.

Esden said the facility immediately called 911 when they learned about the incident. Staff members are cooperating with investigators, Esden said.

Investigators said the suspect was arrested in a battery and kidnapping case against the same victim at the same facility back in April.

The suspect was issued a no trespassing warning, but it was rescinded after the charges were dropped, investigators said.

A rape kit has been conducted on the 76-year-old victim, but because she has dementia, she has not been able to verbally tell investigators what happened to her.

The suspect's name is being withheld so that the victim's identity isn't released, per News 13's Crime Guidelines.

Serenades by Sonata Health Care has sent an email to all family members of residents to alert them of the incident and investigation.
