A group of University of Central Florida engineering students who designed and built a prosthetic limb for a Lake County boy were honored Wednesday.

In July the students used what they learned in school to build a prosthetic arm for 6-year-old Alex Pring from Groveland.

The UCF students created Alex’s new arm using a 3D printer and used commonly found materials to build it for $350. That’s just a tiny fraction of what children’s prosthetic limb would normally cost, which can be up to about $40,000.

On Wednesday in Los Angeles, UCF grad student Albert Manero and more than a dozen other UCF engineering students who call themselves Limbitless Team, were honored for their work at STEAM Gala 2014.  The organization works to create opportunities for youth to develop 21st century skills and inspire to pursue careers in STEAM: Science, Technology, Engineering, Art, and Math.
