Two women are dead and the suspect in the murders is hospitalized after an officer opened fire during a pursuit in Marion County.

Just before 3 p.m. Monday, officers responded to a disturbance at the SpringWood Village Apartments on the 1500 block of Southeast 27th Street.

Police said they were answering a call about multiple shots fired and a suspect fleeing on a motorcycle.

One of the officers chased the motorcycle north on Southeast Lake Weir Avenue and then east on the 1600 block of Southeast 17th Street.

During the pursuit, the Ocala police officer fired shots and the fleeing suspect crashed. The suspect, Ricardo De Jesus Barrera, 54, was taken to a local hospital in critical condition. Police are calling this an officer-involved shooting, but will not say whether Barrera was actually shot.

Officers located two dead women at the apartment complex -- Bonnie Motto, 34, and her mother, Julia Motto, 67. Police said Bonnie was Barrera's ex-girlfriend and mother of his child.

"Hot temper, control, over everybody," Bill Motto said of Barrera. "He wanted to be in control."

Bonnie's father Bill said his daughter tried unsuccessfully to get a restraining order against Barrera earlier in the day Monday. Bill Motto said the order was not granted.

Two children, a 6-year-old girl and 22-month-old boy, were also in the apartment, but neither were injured. The boy is Barrera's son. The children will stay with relatives.

FDLE is investigating the shooting.
