Since 2006, questions continue to arise about when a new state-of-the-art military training facility will be built in Flagler County.

Monday, Florida’s top general told county leaders he still doesn’t know.

Maj. Gen. Emmett Titshaw, the Adjutant General of Florida, said the facility has been designed and is “shovel-ready.” The 80,000-square-foot facility is scheduled to take over an empty building at the Flagler County Airport.

However, the remaining holdup continues to be federal money and the budget released by the White House.

The $22 million readiness center would house both National Guard and Army Reserve troops, who are currently headquartered in Daytona Beach, on a site the city wants for new development.

“The facility in Daytona, Daytona's a great community, wonderful people,” Titshaw said. “But the facility was 50 years old and required many, many millions of dollars to bring it back to an acceptable facility. This building, a new facility, is just what we needed to do, which is the right answer.”

Florida National Guard leaders hope the presidential budget, which should be released in February or March, will include the readiness center.

Military leaders said once ground is broken, it should take about 18 months of construction before that armory is completed.
