The top cop on the Space Coast is taking on more responsibilities this month.

Brevard County Sheriff Wayne Ivey is now in charge of both Port Canaveral security and Animal Services.

Earlier this year, the Brevard County Sheriff's Office also took over school district security.

Sheriff Ivey says he has confidence his 1,400-member team can handle the extra responsibilities.

In Port Canaveral, the local police department was disbanded so that the sheriff's office could handle Florida's fastest growing cruise port.

BCSO is now in charge of law enforcement and security at the port.

"It's the infrastructure that's going to have to grow at the same rate the port is growing and that's where our agency brings to the table that already in place infrastructure," said Ivey.

More than 60 employees from the port were allowed to stay on with the sheriff's office.

Many were sworn in Monday, during the agency's largest swear-in ceremony ever.

The sheriff's office also assumed responsibility for the county's animal shelters. More than 40 animal service employees were kept on.

"Everyday our agency takes care of 1,500 inmates," said Ivey. "We feed them, we provide medical for them, we keep them from getting out, we keep them from fighting with each other, we create programs to reintegrate them back into society, that's the exact the same thing we do in the animal shelter business."

Animal services has been controversial for years, as some residents complained about the mismanagement of money and animals.

The sheriff's office hopes to change that.

With the addition to school security, some question if the sheriff's office has too much power. But Sheriff Ivey says his agency was chosen for it's success at reducing the crime rate and hands on involvement in the community.

"We didn't go looking for those components," said Ivey. "But when we were asked to step up and be team players, we certainly stepped up and we're excited about it," said Ivey.
