Bags and bags of okra, tomatoes, milk and yogurt were given out Friday in Poinciana.

It's all courtesy of Farm Share, a food bank that specializes in fruits and vegetables from Florida farmers.

Families said the boxes packed with food was something they desperately needed.

“Anything that I can get that’s free that can help out my family, because I am not working, is great. You know? And I know a lot of people out here are doing bad,” Poinciana resident Evette McCloud said.

We spoke with many of the families waiting in line, and they told us a key reason they came out was to get the free fresh produce.

"They are actually giving away healthy food versus all the processed stuff you would normally get at a food bank," resident Kimberly Varney said.

Several of the people in attendance where those who use assistance to buy groceries or are just simply on tight budgets. They said that’s why they can’t afford the fresh fruits and veggies.

At the end of the day around 1,000 people came out and received bags and boxes full of food. After such a high turnout, the Association of Poinciana said they plan on inviting Farm Share to come out and bring more food for the community again next year.
