A park is set to be renamed after a long-time Brevard County community activist who spearheaded programs that helped better his neighborhood.

Bennie Hopkins Sr. dedicated his life to serving his country and community. This weekend a renovated park in Melbourne will be rededicated in his name.

It's a park on Grant Street that recently was renewed with updated playground equipment, a sidewalk, plus memorial bench and marker.

Hopkins died earlier this year. He served as an award-winning registered nurse in the Army for two decades. Later he was Senior Recreation Supervisor at Grant Street Community Center for 10 years, leading the way in new programs for residents.

The ribbon cutting ceremony will be held at 10 a.m. Saturday with a reception to follow.
