Police need the public’s help as they continue to search for a driver they say hit and critically injured a 71-year-old woman while she was crossing the street.

The hit-and-run happened about 4:30 Tuesday afternoon as the woman was walking across State Road 436 near Crane’s Roost - from Festival Drive to Hattaway Drive.

Police have released surveillance video from a business not far from where the hit-and-run happened. That video shows an SUV speeding past other cars on State Road 436 just after police say the vehicle's driver hit 71-year-old Cynthia Grummond.

Grummond was crossing State Road 436 with her 90 year old mother. Grummond’s mother was able to cross – but Grummond was hit by the SUV and critically injured.

Investigators say the hit-and-run driver had a green light and was making a left turn onto State Road 436 but did not have a green arrow, so when Grummond and her mother were using this crosswalk here to cross 436 as pedestrians, they had the right of way.

Several drivers called 911 and described the SUV as silver colored, and it’s driver as a blonde-haired woman.

“Yeah it was a woman with blondish hair. That’s all I can say,” said one 911 caller.

Some of the callers said the hit-and-run driver stopped briefly right after the accident, then sped off – eventually getting onto I-4 East towards Sanford. And some of the callers even tried to catch up with her.

“I was trying to find the SUV but I can’t find it,” said one 911 caller.

Police say Grummond is the primary caretaker for her 90 year old mother, and they say the 71-year-old is in grave condition at the hospital.

“Sometimes we call these things accidents, and right now all we want to do is hear from that other person involved in this accident - what happened.  And it would better help us piece together this crash,” said Officer Robert Pelton with the Altamonte Springs Police Department.

If you witnessed the crash or have any information that could lead to the driver of the SUV, call Altamonte Springs Police Traffic Investigators at (407) 339-2441.
