Police said they found a Volusia County man dead in the driver's seat of an SUV completely submerged under water after crashing into Spruce Creek.

Port Orange Police and fire crews responded around 7:30 a.m. Wednesday to the scene near South Williamson Boulevard and Anita Street, near the Moody Bridge. When they arrived, officers said they found a Nissan Pathfinder completely under water at the center of Spruce Creek.

Three police officers, two firefighters and a Volusia deputy entered the water in an attempt to rescue any occupants. Inside the SUV, they found Michael K. Gross, 51, of Port Orange dead in the driver's seat. No one else was in the vehicle, police said.

A tow truck pulled the vehicle from the water, and Gross' body was taken to the Volusia County Medical Examiner's Office for an autopsy scheduled for Thursday.

The crash remains under investigation, and police said they are trying to figure out how Gross' SUV ended up in the water, and how long it was there.
