A Volusia County woman was arrested after deputies said she was found drunk and passed out with a shivering young child on the back porch of a home early Tuesday morning.

The Volusia County Sheriff’s Office said the homeowner on Sun Valley Drive in Daytona Beach called 911 around 1:30 a.m. to report a shivering 2-year-old boy and the woman, later identified as Candace Long, 28, outside on his back porch.

The homeowner, Tom Fordham, said Long was covered with a blanket while the little boy was standing on the porch shivering. "Its not everyday you walk outside and see a little kid on the porch. So as far as being worried, I was concerned."

Deputies said Long was incoherent and muttering that she was celebrating her birthday. Investigators determined that Long lived two blocks away and had been asked by the child's father to watch the boy while he ran errands.

Family members told deputies that Long didn't have permission to leave the house with the boy.

Long was arrested and charged with child neglect and booked into the Volusia County Branch Jail in Daytona Beach.
