Police said they were forced to shoot and kill a robbery suspect Wednesday after he crashed on I-95, got out of his car and drew his weapon.

The officer-involved shooting of Luke Daniel Castello, 22, shut down both northbound lanes on I-95 for more than an hour, forcing traffic off at the Dunlawton Avenue exit. One lane reopened on the interstate around 2 p.m.

Investigators said the incident started around 10 a.m. Wednesday, when police in Daytona Beach said Castello robbed a motel room there. Police sent out an alert to other officers from nearby agencies to be on the lookout for a suspected vehicle.

Port Orange Police said officers spotted the vehicle headed northbound on I-95. They said Castello was speeding at around 80 mph, when he lost control and crashed on the side of the interstate.

Police said Castello then got out of the car, and they noticed he had a weapon, prompting them to open fire, killing the suspect.

At least six officers were on the scene. The Florida Department of Law Enforcement has begun interviewing those officers to find out who among them fired the shots, and whether Castello fired first.

The Florida Highway Patrol is also on scene investigating the crash, itself, while the Volusia County Sheriff's Office is handling the crime scene investigation.

Jail records from Volusia County showed Castello had a criminal history, having been arrested four times between July 2012 and April 2013 on multiple charges, including burglary, criminal mischief, possession of drug paraphernalia, illegal possession of a concealed firearm, and sale or possession of a firearm with an altered or removed serial number.
