Flags are being flown at half-staff Wednesday to mark the 12th anniversary of the Sept. 11 terrorist attacks on the World Trade Center and the Pentagon, and the crashing of Flight 93 near Shanksville, Pa. in 2001.

Moments of silence are planned around the nation Wednesday morning in memory of the nearly 3,000 people who died in the attacks.

Here are some of the 9/11 memorials and events that happened around Central Florida on Wednesday.

Kissimmee - Valencia College Osceola

Address: 1800 Denn John Lane, Kissimmee

If you drive by the Valencia College’s Osceola campus this week, you’re sure to notice a lot of red, white, and blue.

“I’m glad we’re all surrounded by it. It’s a good reminder,” said student Bryce Pace.

2,977 flags were raised and span from the entrance to the college all the way to middle of the campus.

“They’re representing the victims who lost their lives in 2001, September 11th,” said Marie Brady of Valencia’s Campus Operations.

Brady pointed out that many of the students at Valencia were only between six and eight years old when the attacks took place.

She says having a visual reminder of how many were lost, can make an impact.

“I was in second grade at Ross E. Jeffries Elementary school. It was kind of tough. All of the older people were crying and I wasn’t sure what was going on,” recalls Pace.

Student and faculty volunteers spent several days placing the donated flags into the ground.

“They might not remember much about this date, but we want to educate them so we know what happened on September 11th.”

The Rotary Club, which helped get donations for the flags, is donating extra funds to provide scholarships for local first responders continuing their education.
