It's been a year and a half since a Brevard County deputy was shot and killed in the line of duty and now the accused shooters will have their day in court.

Thursday, a judge set a trial date for Brandon Bradley and Andria Kerchner for Jan. 27, 2014.

Both will stand trial for the murder of Deputy Barbara Pill.

It is expected to last 4 to 5 weeks. The State Attorney's Office said the case against Brandon Bradley and Andria Kerchner is at the top of the list now that the Zimmerman trial is over.

The pair is accused of gunning down Deputy Barbara Pill during a traffic stop back on March 6, 2012.

Investigators said they had just stolen items from a West Melbourne motel room, a chase ensued, and when Deputy Pill pulled them over on John Rodes Boulevard and Elena Way in Melbourne, Bradley allegedly opened fire through his car window, killing her.

They sped away, officials said, only to crash into a ditch a couple of miles away.

Both Bradley and Kerchner have had several court hearings since their arrests. Most have been like the one Thursday where they did not appear in person.

But Deputy Pill's widower, Steve, has been there for many of them.

He said he and his family, including his two sons who work for the Brevard County Sheriff's Office, are ready for the ordeal to end.

"It's going to be a relief, because it will put this waiting game, when that's done, it will be a big release of pressure on the family," he said.

Barbara Pill was a 30-year law enforcement veteran, 15 of which were with the Brevard County Sheriff's Office.

She and Steve were married for nearly three decades.

He believes once the trial is over her death will not be in vain.

"And when the justice is dispensed, yeah, it will bring some closure to that," Pill said.

Prosecutors said it will likely be a lengthy process to qualify a jury for the case because they are seeking the death penalty against Bradley.

They expect at least one more pre-trial hearing to go over any potential issues.
