Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission (FWC) biologists have euthanized a second bear captured in the Seminole County neighborhood where a woman was attacked Dec. 2.

They said the 200-pound male bear captured Sunday night closely fits the description of the animal that injured Susan Chalfant.

The 54-year-old continues to recover from serious facial wounds after officers said she was pushed to the ground while walking her dogs on English Ivy Court, off Markham Woods Road.

"Public safety remains a top priority. Because the incident resulted in serious injuries, we decided to put the bear down," said FWC Executive Director Nick Wiley.

Officers have yet to positively identify the bear captured Sunday or the Dec. 5 capture as the bear involved in the attack. However, they said they euthanized both because they were a close enough match and it's a matter of public safety.

The bear captured Sunday night was very aggressive, FWC said. The organization has also received complaints about this particular bear going into garages and being aggressive.

Florida Fish and Wildlife said they will continue to keep several traps up in the area.

Biologists said the female cub captured Dec. 3 is doing well at a rehabilitation center in Crystal River.
