Walt Disney Pictures spent Tuesday filming part of its upcoming movie, "Tomorrowland," at New Smyrna Beach, shutting down a busy stretch of U.S. Highway 1.

The filming temporarily closed U.S. 1 from 10th Street north to the Three Bridges area from 4 p.m. until about 2 a.m. Wednesday.

"Tomorrowland," scheduled for release in May 2015, will star George Clooney and Hugh Laurie. Little is known about the science fiction fantasy, which was previously known under the working title "1952," but here's the plot summary released by Walt Disney Studios:

"Bound by a shared destiny, a bright, optimistic teen bursting with scientific curiosity and a former boy-genius inventor jaded by disillusionment embark on a danger-filled mission to unearth the secrets of an enigmatic place somewhere in time and space that exists in their collective memory as 'Tomorrowland.'"

Filming also reportedly took place at Disney World on Monday, when Walt Disney's Carousel of Progress -- in Tomorrowland at the Magic Kingdom -- was closed for the day. It's believed the "Tomorrowland" in the movie is an alternate reality resembling the Tomorrowland we known from the theme park.

Disney also shot scenes for "Tomorrowland" in Altamonte Springs on Tuesday.
