Children trick-or-treating Thursday night in a Deltona neighborhood got a rude surprise when Volusia County deputies said a 63-year-old man answered the door in a robe that exposed his genitals.

One deputy even said when he was dispatched to the home to investigate, the same thing happened to him.

John Vowels was arrested at his home on Deed Circle on two counts of lewd and lascivious exhibition.

The Volusia County Sheriff's Office first received a call about a flasher in Deltona just before 9 p.m. on Halloween night. Deputies said two brothers, ages 12 and 14, were trick-or-treating when some other kids warned them to be careful of Vowels' home, because there was a naked man there.

The boys told deputies they didn't believe the kids and decided to trick-or-treat at the house. They said Vowels then came to the door wearing an open robe with nothing underneath. The boys ran home and told their father, who contacted the Sheriff's Office.

When a deputy went to investigate, he said he looked through a window and saw a naked Vowels sitting on a couch. Vowels then answered the door wearing a white bathrobe with his genitals exposed. The deputy also said he smelled alcohol on Vowels' breath, and he was slurring his speech.

Vowels told the deputy he may have answered the door to trick-or-treaters in his robe, and said he offered them money because he didn't have any Halloween candy.

Vowels was taken into custody and booked into the Volusia County Branch Jail in Daytona Beach.
