The deadliest tropical storm of 2011 is now the last storm to be named "Irene."

That name has now been retired from the list of Atlantic Basin tropical storm names by the World Meteorological Organization's hurricane committee because of the damage and deaths it caused in August.

Replacing Irene on the list is "Irma," which could make its debut during the 2017 hurricane season.

Officials said Irene was directly responsible for 49 deaths -- 41 in the U.S., three in Haiti and five in the Dominican Republic.

Including flood losses, damage in the U.S. alone has been estimated at $15.8 billion.

Irene is the 76th storm name to be retired since 1954.
