Lake and Sumter County authorities say they’re dealing with dozens of people flooding the parking lots of area gas stations.

Leesburg’s mayor recently recorded it happening. Mayor Jay Hurley says he and his family stopped at a gas station on State Road 44 in Wildwood next to a Steak ‘n Shake on Easter evening when authorities say at least 50 cars had pulled in and blocked the entrances and exits.

"Everybody had their radio going, and then they just got out of their cars and started walking around like they were at a party,” Hurley said.

Hurley said they were stuck there for an hour.

"It did frustrate me. It was alarming to a lot of people who were there. My family had my mother there; she was very scared and my son was shaking,” he said.

A similar situation has been happening in Leesburg on U.S. 441. Gas station employees say police are now blocking off their entrances every Saturday before local bars close.

Sumter County authorities say large crowds also gather at local businesses after a Father's Day event, but they are well prepared and will be staffing more deputies.
