A man wearing headphones and jogging along railroad tracks in Polk County was struck and killed by an Amtrak passenger train Monday, authorities said.

The man, who has been identified as 26-year-old Edwardo Salazar, of Frostproof, was jogging alongside the wooden crossties around noon in the Big Sun Ray area in Frostproof, just under the U.S. overpass, the Polk County Sheriff's Office said.

The engineer on the Amtrak 98 Silver Meteor train blew his horn several times, but the jogger continued on as if he couldn't hear.

"The train made every effort to alert the man and stop, but struck the man, and he is deceased on scene," the sheriff's office said.

Amtrak 98 Silver Meteor runs between Miami and New York and was on a northbound leg between Sebring and Winter Haven. Detectives are investigating.
