Joshua and Sharyn Hakken, who kidnapped their children and sailed to Cuba in April 2013, took plea deals in court Tuesday morning.

In a Hillsborough County courtroom Tuesday, Joshua Hakken mouthed the words "I love you" to his wife before she took her deal.

Sharyn Hakken pleaded guilty to her role in the kidnapping of their two young sons and sailing with them to Cuba in April 2013 after losing custody. The Hakkens were apprehended in Cuba and brought back to Florida.

Prosecutors said Joshua Hakken was convinced he was being persecuted by the federal government because he had uncovered a plot to poison Americans with chemicals from airplanes.

The two faced a lengthy list of charges after allegedly taking the children from the north Tampa home of Sharyn's parents.

Sharyn Hakken could spend a maximum of 10 years in prison.

Moments after she took her deal, Joshua took a plea deal that will include a maximum of 15 years in prison. Joshua also pleaded guilty to tying up his mother-in-law and holding her at gunpoint when he took his sons Cole and Chase, then 4 and 2 years old.

Sharyn's parents, who have custody of the boys, agreed with the plea deal. Both said they wanted the boys' parents to have a chance at life after prison.

Separate trials for Joshua and Sharyn were scheduled to start next week.

While Sharyn’s in prison, her attorney said she wants to cut ties with her husband.

“They have no relationship as far as she's concerned. She does want to get divorced, and she is currently in another relationship,” said Bryant Camareno, Sharyn's Attorney.

Sharyn said she was simply sucked in by a controlling husband.

“He had her convinced that the world was going to end so that was the whole basis for them wanting to take the children to Cuba,” Camareno said.

Both will be sentenced Oct. 9.
