Two Winter Haven nursing assistants are facing charges after police said video showed them tormenting and hitting a male patient with Alzheimer's disease.

Yashika Z. Jones, 28, and Rose D. Blaise, 35, were arrested Wednesday on charges of battery of an elderly person. Police say the women are certified nursing assistants at Palm Gardens Nursing Home.

Police say the investigation began when the son of 76-year-old William Wilson, who is in the advanced stages of Alzheimer's, noticed unusual bruising on his father's arms and legs and reported it to the nursing home staff. The staff members had no explanation for the bruises.

The son, Dale Wilson, became concerned his father was being abused, so he set up a "nanny cam" in the room for 30 days that was pointed directly at the bed, police said.

"I feel lots of sadness for my dad and a lot of anger toward the people who were inflicting the damage to him," said Dale Wilson.

According to police, incidents of abuse involving the suspects were recorded on Oct. 7, Oct. 16 and Oct. 24. The incidents involved rubbing Wilson's face, making punching motions towards his face, lunging toward him and making a motion as if to slap him in the face.

"I did tell him I am so sorry for what he had to endure here, I said I had no idea what was happening," Dale Wilson said. "I know there were people in here being mean to you. They can't be mean to you anymore."

"You feel like you've let him down because he depended on us," said Debbie Wilson, William's daughter-in-law. "So you just feel sad."

"This egregious behavior from these two who are supposed to be caring for our infirm is absolutely sickening," said Winter Haven Police Chief Charlie Bird. "There is absolutely no reason for any person, especially an elderly Alzheimer patient, to be treating like this and today those two workers are paying for their actions."

Both are being held without bond.
