A Sumter County man is behind bars after deputies said he shot his brother in the head following an argument over a tractor Tuesday afternoon.

The Sumter County Sheriff’s Office said the shooting happened at the home of their deceased father and the victim drove himself from the home to the Linden Cemetery on Highway 50 HWY and called police.

Deputies arrived at the cemetery where the victim told them his brother, identified as 54-year-old Mark Caines, argued with him over a tractor.  The victim told deputies the argument became physical and Caines shot him in the head with a 9 mm pistol.
An ambulance was called to the scene and transported the victim to Lakeland Regional Medical Center.  The Sheriff’s Office said he has several skull fractures which required several staples and is in stable condition.

Deputies said they went to the home to locate Caines but he was not there so a BOLO was issued.

The Sumter County Sheriff's Office Criminal Investigations Division said they received information Caines possibly returning to Sumter County and a t 5:30 p.m. he returned to his father’s home where he was taken into custody without incident.

Caines was charged with 1 count of Attempted Premeditated Murder and is being held without bond.
