Incumbent Republican governor Rick Scott and Democrat Charlie Crist will meet in one final debate tonight. The pair has already faced off in two prior debates. The state economy will no doubt come up in tonight’s contest.

In the first gubernatorial debate, Scott attacked Crist on job losses. Scott claimed:

"832,000 people lost their job while (Charlie Crist was) governor."

PolitiFact Florida rated the claim HALF TRUE. Reporter Joshua Gillin said the number is fairly accurate, but who's to blame isn’t clear.

“In this case, every expert we talked to about this over the years, because this is not a new thing, has said you can’t blame any governor for losses during a recession,” Gillin said.

According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, Florida lost 822,200 private-sector jobs from January 2007 to December 2010. That’s a few thousand shy of the number in Scott’s claim.

But economists say it’s hard to tell how much influence any governor of any state has on job losses. In fact, some experts say it could take years to find out whether policies have had any effect on job totals at all. Because of those factors, PolitiFact rated the claim HALF TRUE.
