The stars of Bollywood will be coming to Tampa in June 2014 for their version of the Oscar's.

The International Indian Film Academy will be holding a weekend of events and an awards ceremony.

"This announcement rivals the announcement of the RNC, and even surpasses it in terms of worldwide impact," said Visit Tampa Bay CEO Santiago Corrada.

City officials say their convincing bid included showing Tampa's ability to handle large events, like last year’s Republican National Convention and the 2009 Super Bowl. They say support from the community, along with private investments sealed the deal.

Possible venues include Tampa Bay Times Forum, Raymond James stadium, and Florida State Fairgrounds. Word of the event is already spreading to downtown businesses, like Hattricks tavern.

"We're very excited about it, after hockey and basketball we tend to slow down a little bit, so having a boost in June and especially with the size of the event is fantastic for us," said owner John Heffernan.

Tourism officials say business owners like Heffernan have good reason to be excited. The award weekend is expected to bring in 30,000 visitors, 12,000 room nights and an $18 million economic impact.

Numerous events are being planned leading up to the weekend, and it is also expected to create job opportunities. City leaders say they're proud to be the host for the academy's first award ceremony in the U.S.

"It is through arts and entertainment that countries are brought together," said commissioner Al Higginbotham.

Tampa is now among a list of host cities that includes Amsterdam, Singapore, and Toronto.

Tampa city leaders say the IIFA awards weekend is India's biggest media event, with a viewership of almost 800 million. They expect security at the event to be similar to the Super Bowl, and they're relying on in-kind services.
