Joel Schipper, Anchor
Joel Schipper joined the News 13 team in August of 2012 as Weekend Anchor & Reporter.
A native to the Midwest, Joel was born and raised near Grand Rapids, Michigan. He moved to Barry University in Miami on an acting scholarship, and finished his college career at Grand Valley State University in Michigan, with a degree in Broadcast Journalism.
He began his broadcasting career as an intern for the NBC-Universal syndicated entertainment news show "Access Hollywood" in Los Angeles, followed by internships at WSVN (FOX) in Miami, Florida and WOOD (NBC) in Grand Rapids, Michigan.
Joel then landed a job as morning reporter at KMIR, the NBC affiliate in Palm Springs, California. While there, he covered many local and national stories, including the Southern California earthquakes, deadly wildfires, and the Michael Jackson trial.
In 2006 Joel became an Anchor and Reporter at WNDU-TV in South Bend, Indiana for "16 Morning News," as well as the three-hour Saturday morning show while also anchoring Saturday and Sunday nights.
As an Emmy-nominated reporter, he has covered such major events as the Academy Awards, Billboard Music Awards in Miami, red carpet premieres, and other entertainment events in Hollywood, New York City, and Toronto. He has interviewed almost every major A-list celebrity, including Nicole Kidman, Matt Damon, Meryl Streep, Ellen DeGeneres, Janet Jackson and countless others -- even former First Ladies Laura Bush and Hillary Clinton. Joel has also been a freelance correspondent for US Weekly Magazine and Canada's No. 1 entertainment news show "Star! Daily."
Some of his stories have been seen on MSNBC and CNN. In the summer of 2007, Joel appeared on Kathy Griffin's hit reality show "My Life on the D-List" on the Bravo Network.
He has been honored with awards from the Pediatric Brain Tumor Foundation, The Humane Society and The Associated Press.
In his spare time, Joel loves to travel and has a passion for animals – especially reptiles.
